The Shoes that Were Danced to Pieces – Partial Perusal
A not-so-familiar Grimm tale about the three princesses who nightly damaged their shoes. The alto saxophone is the soloist that initiates a waltz, the core of the entire piece. Courtly music represents the king’s entourage as he tests and then executes his daughter’s unsuccessful suitors in an attempt to find out why their shoes are being ruined. The suitor who survives, played by a euphonium, attends a massive and secret midnight party that explains all. The waltz theme becomes resplendent and is interspersed with gallops and polkas. The finale is that of a great Grand Waltz.
